As homeschoolers, we
have only made a few different types of school buses over the years. There are
many different types of buses on the web and we chose to make a 3D egg carton
bus. I cut the tops off 12 count egg cartons giving each child 2 tops to paint yellow.
After the paint dried, I had pre-cut some faces out of magazines for my wee
babes to choose from. I glued around each window and had my babes carefully
place the faces in the windows:
Next I glued the 2 parts
together with my glue gun and secured them with a rubber band until they dried
to make sure they stuck securely together:
For the headlights,
rear lights and side lights, I cut off the bumps from the discarded sides of
the egg cartons. I had my wee ones paint all their bumps. We let them dry, than
we added the appropriate color of glitter (gold and red) to each bump. 2 gold
for the headlights and 6 red for the other lights and when they were dry, I
glue gunned them onto their correct spot. Next I spray painted 4 milk jug lids
black for each child and let them dry. Then I glue gunned them onto the bus for
wheels. I glue gunned a pipe cleaner handle on the top for carrying or hanging.
While they did take several days to build, we sure did love the way they turned
out and after all these years, we still display them at the beginning of every school
year:
Next I chose and easy
school bus for my wee ones to cut and paste featuring movable parts I downloaded from
printables 4 kids. After they colored their buses, I cut them out along with a
backing for sturdiness. Visit my tutorial on how to cut them out together here:
My wee ones really
loved to lift the window flaps, open the doors and move the wipers as I read "The Wheels on the Bus":
You can print this
craft out for your wee babes as well:
And for our Seals on the Bus interactive activity, first we used
the flannelboard figures from Making Learning Fun to perform an interactive
group activity. I placed the cut out figures on the table and the bus on the
flannelboard. My wee babes sang the song
as a whole the first time around as I put the animals in the bus. The second
time around, each child in rote looked for placed the correct animal on the
flannelboard as we sang the song:
Next we made these interactive "Seals on the Bus" buses from Making Learning Fun:
Your wee babes will DIG putting the animals on their buses when they sing the song as
well:
We did other School bus activities as well, like spending time talking
about and putting together our vintage Fisher Price school bus puzzles:

Our next game while simple is hit will all! For some unknown
reason to me my wee babes of every generation just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE matching
games! Well, I laminated school buses, then taking my black white board marker
I wrote letters on the cards. As well, you can write numbers, sight words,
rhyming words, etc just about anything you can think of! Next I turned them over
and laid them out in rows on the carpet and let the excitement begin:
You can make these School Bus Write-N-Wipes for your wee babes. Just click on the link below, download, print out as many as you need on heavy weight tagboard or cardstock, cut them out, laminate and write. Using dry erase markers to write-n-wipe this activity can be used for just about any subject:

Children learn the concept of distance, quantity along with basic
addition and subtraction facts. The object is to spin the spinner to reveal
your move, then ride the bus down the street from home to the schoolhouse using
addition or subtraction to obtain an apple, repeating the process until all the
apples have been obtained by the players. The player with the most apples wins
the game:
Your wee babes will just LOVE playing this rare vintage game! They will have so much fun driving their bus to school and home again, gathering apples along the way I PROMISE you will hear, "Again, again, again!!!" You can get “School House in
a Fun Box” for your children from eBay:

And what wee babe would not want a Twinkie school bus? These were a bit more complicated so my daughter made these for our wee babes yet, Julian gave his hand at it:
Of course my wee babes had to show great-gramma their scrumptious treat:
Using Mini Oreos, toothpicks, mini marshmallows and a butter knife, these Twinkee school busus were not too difficult to build. Poke the toothpicks into the center of the mini oreos, cut off a short section of the Twinkie off the top, use some of the cream from the cut off Twinkee piece to secure the mini marshmallow windows onto the side of the Twinkee, then place the Twinkie school bus on top of the toothpicked Mini Oreos. Be sure your wee ones take the Twinkie off the wheels before eating. Make these for your we babes on a quick shopping trip with FREE shipping form eBay:
