Yes, indeedie it is seed planting time again in our National Forest and we are DIGGIN' the scene!!!

I have been teaching this Seed Unit year after year for decades and it NEVER get old! The trip about this here unit is, it always excites anticipation from planting to harvest to table! And that my web friends, is SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!

I begin the unit for wee ones with my FAV vintage book from the year 1950, The Little Seeds That Grew by Sara G. Klein:

In the first delightful Creation based story we meet  a little boy named Jerry and he wanted to surprise his mother with a fine gift:

So he went outside and dug some soil:

Then he put the soil in a garden box:

With his finger, Jerry made three holes, then put a seed in each hole and covered them:

He lightly watered the soil:

Everyday Jerry sat watching, but the soil looked the same. Then one morning, Jerry saw three little stems poking up:

He put the box near a sunny window:  

And finally Jerry saw three flowers:

Jerry took his gift to his mother. She thanked him and gave him praise:

The Little Seed That Grew 

Another book featuring seeds is "Oh, Say Can you Seed?" from the Cat in the Hat Learning Library features vivid comprehensive illustrations that catch the eyes of any babe. 

In this book, the seed curriculum is implemented in an outside classroom featuring The Cat in the Hat along with Things 1 & 2. 

They whip out anchor charts throughout the story which is a most excellent teaching approach to be emulated. Teaching just cannot get any better than that!!

A Little Seed 

A little seed for me to sow
A little earth to make it grow

A little sun, (Hold arms above head)
A little rain. (Wiggle fingers in the air in a downward motion)
Now pull up all the weeds (pretend to pull weeds)
Our flowers grow, all in a row (hold up all ten fingers lined up like flowers)
From tiny little seeds. (hold thumb and finger to show size of seeds)

About a Month Ago

I took a little seed one day,
About a month ago.
I put it in a pot of dirt,
In hopes that it would grow.

I poured a little water,
To make the soil just right.
I set the pot upon the sill,
Where the sun would give it light.

I checked the pot most every day,
And turned it once or twice.
With a little care and water,
I helped it grow so nice.

Baby Seeds

In a milkweed cradle, snug and warm, (Close fingers in a fist)

Baby seeds are hiding safe from harm. 

Open wide the cradle, hold it high, (Open hand and hold it up high) Come along wind, help them fly. (Wiggle fingers)

Dig a Hole Deep in the Ground
Sung to: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Dig a hole deep in the ground,
Spread some tiny seeds around.
Pat them down - so they will keep,
As they are lying fast asleep.
Rain will help the seeds to grow,
Sunshine keeps them warm you know.

Dig a Little Hole

Dig a little hole. (Dig)
Plant a little seed. (Drop seed)
Pour a little water. (Pour)
Pull a little weed. (Pull and throw)
Chase a little bug. (Chasing motion with hands)
Heigh-ho, there he goes. (Shade eyes)
Give a little sunshine. (Circle arms over head)
Grow a little bean. (Hands grow upward)

Dig and Hoe

Sing to: My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean

In my garden I like to work hard,
In my garden I dig in the ground.
In my garden I grow big veggies,
And have lots of flowers around.

Oh, how my garden just grows and grows.

Will help your flowers grow. (Hold one arm parallel to ground and move other arm up behind it with fingers extended to represent a flower growing.)

It is time to plant a seed in the ground,

I  Planted a Little Seed

Seeds

 

Seeds are funny, funny things,
Some have stickers,
Some have wings.

Some round and flat,
Some like a ball.
Some are hidden inside of fruit,
Some in pods or underground roots.
Some seeds are foods,
And good to eat.
Like corn or beans,
Or nuts for a treat.

Shovel, Rake and Hoe

First you take a shovel, a rake, and a hoe,
Plant a little garden, plant seeds in a row.
Water them and weed them,
Through all the summer heat.
And then you will have some
Flowers or vegetables to eat.

The seed was tired,
So he snuggled up,
Close beside his brothers. (Wiggle fingers on left hand)
The sun got mad,

Who blew of all the covers! (Wave right hand for wind, remove “covers” (left hand))
