We like to start our unit with reciting the following rhymes using our flannelboard or pocket chart. You may want to incorporate some of these in your unit as well:

Five Little Weathermen

Five little weathermen standing near the gate.
The first one said, "My it's getting late".
The second one said, "There are storm clouds in the sky".
The third one said, "Let's run inside".
The fourth one said, "Wait, the sun is peeking out".
The fifth one said, "That's what weather's all about".
ooooo....went the wind, and up flew their kite,
and the 5 little weathermen chased it out of sight.

Fluffy Cloud

What is fluffy white and floats up high, (point up at the sky)
Like a pile of cotton in the sky?
And when the wind blows hard and strong, (wiggle hands side to side) What very gently floats along? (wiggle fingers and hands gently back and forth)

What brings the rain? (Open palms up)

What brings the snow that showers on us way down below? (look down) When you look up in the sky, (look up)

What is that thing you see floating by? (a Cloud)

Grey Pussycat

A big Grey pussycat (Pull on whiskers), pussycat, pussycat,
A big Grey pussycat lives in a house. (Make house with both hands)
A big Grey pussycat, pussycat, pussycat,
A big Grey pussycat POUNCED on a MOUSE!! (clap hands together).

Hat Happy

I wear my hat upon my head,
I wear my hat upon my hair.
I wear it here I wear it there,
My hat and I go everywhere.

I wear it in the rain and snow,
I wear it even when it's hot.
My hair feels lonely when its off,
My head feels happy when its not.

And when it's time to get to bed,
And Mama says, "Take off your hat!"
I do exactly as I'm told,
And put it on my kitty cat!

I Am a Little Cat

Sing to: I'm a Little Teapot

I am a little kitty-cat,
Soft and furry.
I will be your friend,
So do not worry.
Right up on your lap I like to hop,
I will purr, purr, purr and never stop.

I Know A Cat

Sing to: Bingo

I know a cat with perky ears,
And kitty is her name-o.
K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y,
And Kitty is her name-o.

When she makes a sound it's "meow,"
And Kitty is her name-o.
K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y,
And Kitty is her name-o.

Look Out the Window

Sing to: Frere Jacques

What's the weather, what's the weather,
On this (Monday), On this (Monday)?
Let's look out the window,
Let's look out the window?

Replace ( ) with the correct word.

Look Outside

Sing to: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

Look outside now, can you say
What the weather is today?
Is there sunshine, is there rain,
Is wind blowing down the lane?
Look outside now, can you say
What the weather is today?
Look outside now, can you say
What the weather is today?
Are there snowflakes falling down,
Are there big clouds floating around?
Look outside now, Can you say
What the weather is today?

Oh My, What Will the Weather Be?

Sing to:  Oh Dear, What Can the Matter Be?

Oh my, what will the weather be?
Oh my, what will the weather be?
Oh my, what will the weather be?
It will be (rainy, cloudy, sunny, snowy, windy.. ) today.

Our Hats

These are our hats.
What are they for?
They keep our heads warm when we go out the door.

That Spells Hats

Sing to: Frere Jacques

H-A-T-S
H-A-T-S
That spells hats,
That spells hats.
Everybody wears them,
Everybody wears them.
When they're cold,
When they're cold.

Other Verses:
To protect their heads.
To shade their eyes.
To keep them warm.
When they dress up.

The Weather is a Funny Thing

The weather is a funny thing,
Funny thing, funny thing,
The weather is a funny thing
It changes everyday.

Monday is a ________ day,
______ day, ________day
Monday is a ________ day,

That's the weather for today!

(Sunny Day)

The sun is out and shining bright,

Shining bright, shining bright.

The sun is out and shining bright,

On this lovely day!

The rain is cold and very wet,

Very wet, very wet.

The rain is cold and very wet,

It's such a rainy day!

Out today, out today.

The fluffy clouds are out today,

They are very white (gray)!

The snow comes down all fluffy white,

It's such a snowy day!

The wind is cold (warm) and blustery,

Blustery, blustery.

The wind is cold (warm) and blustery,

On this windy day!

I'm glad I am inside!

There Was a Day

Sing to: B-I-N-G-O

There was a day, when it was hot (warm),

And sunny was the weather.
S-U-N-N-Y,

And Sunny was the weather!

Other Verses:

There was a day when it was wet,

And rainy was the weather.

There was a day when it was cold,

And snowy was the weather.

There was a day when I got blown,

And windy was the weather.

This little Wind Blows Rain

Tap on fingers like This Little Piggy

This little wind blows rain,

This little wind drifts snow.

This little wind brings the sunshine,

This little wind whistles low.

And this little wind,

Rocks the baby birds to and fro.

W is for Weather

Whether the weather be fine,
Or whether the weather be not.
Whether the weather be cold,
Or whether the weather be hot.
We’ll weather the weather,
Whatever the weather,
Whether we like it or not!

What Kind Of Weather

Sing to: Bingo

I went outside the door today,
And sunny was the weather.
SUNNY, SUNNY, SUNNY
And sunny was the weather!
I went outside the door today,
And windy was the weather.
WINDY, WINDY, WINDY
And windy was the weather!
I went outside the door today,
And rainy was the weather.

Whatever the Weather

Is the sun shining, is the rain falling?
Can you tell, Can you tell?

Another Version:

Sing to: Clementine

What's the weather,
What's the weather,
What's the weather like today?

What's the weather like today.
Is it sunny, (make big circle with arms above head)
Is it cloudy, (cover eyes with hands)
Is it rainy out today? (rain fingers)
Is it snowy, (shiver)
Is it windy, (windy arms)
What's the weather like today?

Weather Helper

Sing to: Clementine

Weather Helper, Weather Helper
What's the weather outside?

Is it windy? Is it cloudy? Is there rain? or is there sun?

Who's Afraid of Weather?

Sing to: Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

Who’s afraid of a rainy day, a rainy day, a rainy day?
Who’s afraid of a rainy day? Ha, ha, not me!

I wear my coat on a rainy day, a rainy day, a rainy day.
I wear my coat on a rainy day.
My coat keeps me dry.

Repeat using the following substitutions:

Snowy
Windy (coat - keeps me warm)
Sunny (hat - keeps me cool)

Weather Sayings

The moon and the weather may change together,
But a change of the moon, will not change the weather.

A ring around the sun or moon, means rain or snow coming soon.
When grass is dry at morning light
Look for rain before the night.

Dew on the grass, rain won't come to pass.
When the night goes to bed with a fever, it will awake with a wet head.
When stars shine clear and bright,
We will have a very cold night.

Three days rain will empty any sky.
The sharper the blast, the sooner 'tis past.
If bees stay at home, rain will soon come,
If they flay away, fine will be the day.

When clouds look like black smoke a wise man will put on his cloak.
When the chairs squeak, it's of rain they speak.
Catchy drawer and sticky door,
Coming rain will pour and pour.

When the sun shines while raining,
it will rain the same time again tomorrow.

When the wind blows from the west, fish bite best.
When it blows from the east, fish bite least.

When the wind is in the east, 'tis neither good for man nor beast.
