New Year History

Over the centuries civilizations have been celebrating the birth of the new year with many traditions and superstitions attached to the festivities. 

A New Calendar

Prior to 46 B.C. Rome had instituted a calendar that was 10 months (304 days). This posed a problem when the calendar began to rapidly become inconsistent with the patterns of the sun causing major inaccuracies. Julius Caesar began to consult astronomers during that time to find a more consistent way to measure the days of the year.  These talks instituted the Julian calendar.  You can find out more about the Julian Calendar here:

New Year’s Around The World




Australia:  

Australians have parties and make a loud entrance on New Year’s eve with fireworks, bells, and even loud car horns. On New Year’s Day many go to the beach or to public events.


Brazil

In Brazil some people wear white clothes that represent a desire for peace in the new year. 

England:  

Parties commence on New Year’s Eve waiting for the bells of Big Ben ring at the stroke of midnight.


Holland:  

Time is spent with family rather than at parties exchanging best luck wishes while enjoying Dutch comedies and games.


Italy:  

Italians make lentils for good fortune while spending time with their families. Pork is a traditional gift symbolizing the richness of life in the coming New Year. Fireworks are heard all over the country, in Naples they have a huge fireworks display. Sparkling wine is served at parties along with dancing and games. They also have an unusual tradition throwing old items out of their windows to get ready for the New Year.


Japan:  

“Bonekai” parties are held to forget the previous year and all the troubles that occurred. New Year’s day is a day of joy, the Japanese celebrate with rice wine and ozoni soup. Shrines are also visited on the New Year. 


Mexico:  

A display glass with a candle is used for people to put change into, then filled with water for good luck. Mexicans like Spaniards, eat 12 grapes for good luck during the year. They also walk around the outside of their houses with a suitcase while hoping for travels during the year. A day of cleaning begins on New Year’s day to signify renewal. Fireworks displays are thought to scare away spirits allowing for safe passage into the New Year.




Russia:  

Ushers in the New Year with fireworks, Russian vodka, and champagne. People may be singing carols or telling fortunes. A zakuska table is laid out for parties that feature appetizers rather than a huge meal.


Southern U.S.

In the South some people eat black eyed peas and turnip greens. The peas signify coins and the turnip greens signify money. Eating them is said to bring you prosperity.

 


Spain:  

Just after midnight the Spaniards eat twelve grapes believing it will bring 12 good months in the new year.

Venezuela

Venezuela and in several other countries they wear red or yellow underwear for good luck.

Auld Lang Syne



This song was published in 1796 by Robert Burns and was created in Scotland. The tradition of singing this song on New Year’s Eve began when Guy Lombardo sang it at The Roosevelt Hotel in Canada. It continued to build popularity, so now it is commonplace to hear it sung when ushering in the New Year.

For wee ones, start your New Year countdown at 10:30 a.m. and countdown to noon instead of midnight. 

Balloon Drop

Place blue, silver and white balloons inside a sheet hanging from the ceiling. When the clock strikes 12, drop the balloons over the children shouting, "Happy New Year!"

Explorer Island Obstacle Course

In a very large room or hall, clear the space as much as possible. Then place some ‘islands’ such as large flat square pillows, paper cut into the shape of islands, circle or small square rugs and the like on the floor. Have your babes jump from island to island without touching the floor so as not to fall into into the sea. Whoever falls into the river the least number of times is the winner.

Hide the Clock

Conceal a ticking clock somewhere in the room then call your babes in to find it. Give points to the child that locates the clock before the alarm goes off.

New Year's Kiss

Play this game using silver wrapped Hershey Kisses and the letters that spell out "Happy New Year".  Write on the bottom of each Hershey Kiss one letter from the words "Happy New Year". Place the Hershey Kisses in a large sized bowl and have your babes pull out 12 Hershey Kisses each. Instruct them to put their letters together to see who can spell the words "Happy New Year". If no one can immediately spell out the words, the first player retrieves a Kiss from the bowl then returns an unneeded one, and so on. After someone spells out the phrase, they may keep their candies. You may also play this game using small pre-cut red lips.

New Year’s Eve Parade

Bring back the New Year’s of yesteryear banging noisemakers, pots and pans with wooden spoons, musical instruments, and the like around your yard or neighborhood when the clock strikes 12.

New Years Tree

Remove your ornaments from your Christmas tree but leave on the lights, we also left on our candy garland. Place money, candy, or small toys inside blue, silver or white balloons, then place them in the tree. 

For younger babes beginning at 12 NOON each babe chose a balloon, 

pop it, 

then retrieved his prize which was a small army guy. 

They counted down each hour in like manner until 9 P.M. as babes they are. For older babes at  midnight have them pop the balloons and keep what is inside.

Piñata New Year

Lower a ball shaped piñata painted silver to resemble the ball in New York City. When the clock strikes 12, break open the piñata.

Set Your Clocks

Set all your clocks, alarms, and cell phones in your home to go off at midnight or for younger babes, set them to go off at 8 PM or 9 PM.
