Yes, indeedie it is seed planting time again in our National Forest and we are DIGGIN' the scene!!!

So come along with us and DIG our seed science scene featuring videos, rhymes, links and a FREEBIE!

I have been teaching this Seed Unit year after year for decades and it NEVER get old! The trip about this here unit is, it always excites anticipation from planting to harvest to table! And that my web friends, is SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!

I begin the unit for wee ones with my FAV vintage book from the year 1950, The Little Seeds That Grew by Sara G. Klein:

from the Christian Faith and Life Program for Church and Home:

In the first delightful Creation based story we meet  a little boy named Jerry and he wanted to surprise his mother with a fine gift:

So he went outside and dug some soil:

Then he put the soil in a garden box:

With his finger, Jerry made three holes, then put a seed in each hole and covered them:

He lightly watered the soil:

Everyday Jerry sat watching, but the soil looked the same. Then one morning, Jerry saw three little stems poking up:

He put the box near a sunny window:

And finally Jerry saw three flowers:

Jerry took his gift to his mother. She thanked him and gave him praise:

This little book is the perfect addition to any Seed Unit for wee ones with its brief narration and detailed illustrations geared just for them. You will want to add this book to your collection from Amazon:

or choose from a larger selection on eBay:

The Little Seed That Grew

Another book featuring seeds is "Oh, Say Can you Seed?" from the Cat in the Hat Learning Library features vivid comprehensive illustrations that catch the eyes of any babe.

In this book, the seed curriculum is implemented in an outside classroom featuring The Cat in the Hat along with Things 1 & 2.

They whip out anchor charts throughout the story which is a most excellent teaching approach to be emulated. Teaching just cannot get any better than that!!

Check it out as you will want to add this book to your seed library as well:

eBay has a rather large selection to choose from:

Oh, Say Can You Seed?

And if you have visited our lush garden from the days of yesteryear before, you are hep that I DIG the film strip scene! What is a Seed? from the Grassroots Science Series is a tiptop visual and verbal media approach to this unit:

The film takes you on a journey during planting time and my babes were diggin' the scene as well:

This series is somewhat difficult to locate but give eBay a try:

A Little Seed

A little seed for me to sow
A little earth to make it grow
A little hole, a little pat,
A little wish, and that is that,
A little sun, a little shower.
A little while -
And then, a flower!

A Little Sun

A little sun, (Hold arms above head)
A little rain. (Wiggle fingers in the air in a downward motion)
Now pull up all the weeds (pretend to pull weeds)
Our flowers grow, all in a row
(hold up all ten fingers lined up like flowers)
From tiny little seeds. (hold thumb and finger to show size of seeds)

I took a little seed one day,
I put it in a pot of dirt,
In hopes that it would grow.

I poured a little water,
To make the soil just right.
I set the pot upon the sill,
Where the sun would give it light.

I checked the pot most every day,
And turned it once or twice.
With a little care and water,
I helped it grow so nice.

Baby Seeds
In a milkweed cradle, snug and warm, (Close fingers in a fist)
Baby seeds are hiding safe from harm.
Open wide the cradle, hold it high, (Open hand and hold it up high) Come along wind, help them fly. (Wiggle fingers)

Dig a Hole Deep in the Ground
Sung to: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Dig a hole deep in the ground,
Spread some tiny seeds around.
Pat them down - so they will keep,
As they are lying fast asleep.
Rain will help the seeds to grow,
Sunshine keeps them warm you know.
Dig a Little Hole
Dig a little hole. (Dig)
Plant a little seed. (Drop seed)
Pour a little water. (Pour)
Pull a little weed. (Pull and throw)
Chase a little bug. (Chasing motion with hands)
Heigh-ho, there he goes. (Shade eyes)
Give a little sunshine. (Circle arms over head)
Grow a little bean. (Hands grow upward)

Dig and Hoe
Sing to: My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean

In my garden I like to work hard,
In my garden I dig in the ground.
In my garden I grow big veggies,
And have lots of flowers around.
Dig, hoe, dig, hoe,
Oh, how my garden just grows and grows.
Dig, hoe, dig ,hoe,
In my garden things grow.

Dig, Dig, Dig the Ground
Sing to: Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Dig, dig, dig the earth, (Make digging motion)
Then you plant your seeds. (Pretend to drop seeds)
A gentle rain, (Flutter fingers down)
And bright sunshine, (Circle arms above head)
Will help your flowers grow.
(Hold one arm parallel to ground and move other arm up behind it with fingers extended to represent a flower growing.)

Five Little Seeds

Five little seeds,
Five little seeds.
Three will make flowers,
And two will make weeds.
Under the leaves,
And under the snow,
Five little seeds are
Waiting to grow.
Out comes the sun,
Down comes a shower.
And up come the three,
Pretty pink flowers.
Out comes the sun,
That every plant needs,
And up come two,
Funny old weeds.

From Seed to Flower
Sing to: If You're Happy and You Know It

It is time to plant a seed in the ground,
It is time to plant a seed in the ground.
Put the seed in the ground,
Pat the dirt all around,
It is time to plant a seed in the ground,

From the little seed shoots a little sprout,
From the little seed shoots a little sprout.
It needs water and some sun,
But the growing is not done,
When the little seed shoots a little sprout.

From the little sprout shoots a helpful stem,
From the little sprout shoots a helpful stem.
Then some leaves will start to grow,
Getting water from below,
From the little sprout shoots a helpful stem.

Then, finally a flower will appear,
Then finally a flower will appear.
With colors nice and bright,
It is a pretty sight!
When finally a flower does appear.

I Am a Little Flower Pot
Tune: I’m a Little Teapot

I am a little flower pot mom put out (Point to self)
If you take care of me, I will sprout. (Nod head, point to self)
When you water me, I will grow
(Make sprinkling motions w/ right hand)
Into a pretty flower, don’t you know! (Raise left hand slowly up from
floor, make wide circle with hands or arms)

I Am a Tiny Seed
Sing to: I'm a Little Teapot

I am a tiny seed, I sleep deep in the ground.
I lie asleep - I don't make a sound.
I am waking up now - see me sprout,
I open my leaves and they fan out.
Another Version:
I am a little seed in the soil so deep,
I sit and I wait and I don’t make a peep.
Give me rain and sunshine, and what do you know,
I sprout from the soil and I start to grow!

I  Planted a Little Seed
Sing to: I'm a Little Tea Pot

I planted a little seed in the dark, dark ground,
Out came the yellow sun, big and round.
Down came the cool rain nice and slow,
Up came the little seed, grow, grow, grow.

Little Brown Seeds

Little brown seeds so small and round,
Are sleeping quietly underground.
Down come the raindrops,
sprinkle, sprinkle, sprinkle.
Out comes the rainbow,
twinkle, twinkle, twinkle.
Little brown seeds way down below,
Up through the earth they grow, grow, grow.
Little green leaves come one by one.
They hold up their heads and look at the sun.

Little Seed

A little seed so soft and round (Form a circle with fingers)
I’ll dig and lay you down (Make a digging motion)
And you may rest beneath the ground
(Cup one hand, lay other over it)
Until your leaves come up, (point up)
And your roots go down. (point down)

Little Seeds We Sow in Spring
Little seeds we sow in spring,
Growing while the robins sing.
Give us carrots, peas and beans,
tomatoes, pumpkins, squash and greens.
And we pick them,
One and all.
Through the summer,
Through the fall.
Winter comes, then spring,
And then little seeds we sow again.
~Else Holmelund Minarik~

Mary Planted Her Garden
Sing to: Mary Had a Little Lamb

Mary planted her garden,
Her garden, her garden.
Mary planted her garden,
With rows of pretty bells.

Mary planted her garden,
Her garden her garden.
Mary planted her garden,
With rows of cockleshells.

My Garden

This is my garden, (Extend one hand forward, palm up)
I’ll rake it with care. (Make raking motion on palm with other hand)
And then some flower seeds,
(Make planting motion with thumb and index finger)
I’ll plant in there.
The sun will shine, (Make circle above head)
And the rain will fall. (Let fingers flutter down to lap)
And my garden will blossom,
(Cup hands together, extend upward slowly until fingers stand straight)
And grow straight and tall.

Over In The Garden
Sing to: Over in the Meadow

Over in the garden with a rake and a hoe,
I will plant some little seeds in a nice straight row.
"Grow," I will say. "Please grow all day long."
And the little seeds will grow,
Into plants big and strong.

Plant a Garden - Perform on each other’s backs:

Dig up the dirt.            (Knead back with fingers.)
Rake the ground.                 (Stroke down with fingertips.)
Dig holes for the seeds.      (Pretend to dig holes with index finger.)
Cover up the seeds.  (Finger covers up seeds.)
Pat the dirt down.                (Pat back with both hands.)
Here comes the rain.       (Lightly touch the back with fingertips.)
Up come the plants.  (Make upward movement with hands.)
Then you pick, pick, pick.  (Pretend to pick plants.)

Seeds

Seeds are funny, funny things,
Some have stickers,
Some have wings.
Some are big,
Some are small.
Some round and flat,
Some like a ball.
Some are hidden inside of fruit,
Some in pods or underground roots.
Some seeds are foods,
And good to eat.
Like corn or beans,
Or nuts for a treat.

Shovel, Rake and Hoe
First you take a shovel, a rake, and a hoe,
Plant a little garden, plant seeds in a row.
Water them and weed them,
Through all the summer heat.
And then you will have some
Flowers or vegetables to eat.

The Gardener Plants the Seeds
Sing to: The Farmer in the Dell
The gardener plants the seeds,
The gardener plants the seeds.
High ho, the derry oh,
The gardener plants the seeds.
2nd verse: The rain falls on the ground.
3rd verse: The sun shines bright and warm.
4th verse: The seeds begin to grow.
5th verse: Flowers grow everywhere.

Another Version:

The farmer sows his seeds
The farmer sows his seeds
Hi-ho the dairy-o
The farmer sows his seeds.
Other verses:
The wind begins to blow…
The rain begins to fall…
The sun begins to shine…
The seeds begin to grow…
The plants grow big and tall…
The farmer cuts his corn…
He puts it in his barns…
And now the harvest is in…

The Little Plant

In the heart of a seed,
Buried deep so deep.
A tiny little plant,
Lay fast asleep.
"Wake," said the sunshine,
"And creep to the light."
"Wake," said the voice
Of the raindrops bright.
The little plant heard
And it rose to see,
What the wonderful,
Outside world might be.

The Sleepy Seed

A tiny seed,
Slept on the ground,
Beneath a leafy cover. (Rest closed left hand on table, lap, etc.)
Until one day,
The sun did say,
“Wake up, it’s time for summer!”
(Hold right fist (sun) over left hand, pretend to knock)
The seed was tired,
So he snuggled up,
Close beside his brothers. (Wiggle fingers on left hand)
The sun got mad,
And called the wind,
Who blew of all the covers!
(Wave right hand for wind, remove “covers” (left hand))

This is the Way We Plant Our Seeds
Sing to: Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush

This is the way we plant our seeds,
Plant our seeds, plant our seeds.
This is the way we plant our seeds,
Early in the morning.

This is the way the wind does blow,
Wind does blow, wind does blow.
This is the way the wind does blow,
Early in the morning.

This is the way the rain comes down,
Rain comes down, rain comes down.
This is the way the rain comes down,
Early in the morning.

This is the way the sun shines bright,
Sun shines bright, sun shines bright.
This is the way the sun shines bright,
Early in the morning.

This is the way the seed grows up,
Seed grows up, seed grows up.
This is the way the seed grows up,
Early in the morning.

This is the way we hoe the soil,
Hoe the soil, hoe the soil.
This is the way we hoe the soil,
Early in the morning.

This is the way we pick our beans,
Pick our beans, pick our beans.
This is the way we pick our beans,
Early in the morning.
Another Version:
This is the way we plant the seeds,
Plant the seeds, plant the seeds.
This is the way we plant the seeds,
So early in the springtime.
Other Verses: This is the way we dig the hole...
This is the way we put in the seeds...
This is the way we cover the seeds...
This is the way we water the seeds...
This is the way we check the seeds...

This is My Garden

This is my garden, (Extend one hand forward, palm up)
I will rake it with care.
(Make raking motion on palm with 3 fingers of other hand)
And then some flower seeds, (Plant motion)
I'll plant in there.
The sun will shine, (Make circle with hands)
And the rain will fall, (Let fingers flutter down to lap)
And my garden will blossom
(Cup hands together; extend upward slowly)
And grow straight and tall.

Tiny Seeds

Tiny seed planted just right, (Fold yourself into a ball)
Not a breath of air, not a ray of light.
Rain falls slowly to and fro,
And now the seed begins to grow. (Begin to unfold)
Slowly reaching for the light,
With all its energy, all its might.
The little seed’s work is almost done,
To grow up tall and face the sun. (Stand up tall with arms stretched out)

Up Pops the Flower

Sing to: Pop! Goes the Weasel

We plant some seeds in the dirt,
The rain falls in a shower.
The sun comes out, and what do you know?
Up! Pops a flower!
